In mitral valve regurgitation, the blood leaks backward during systole through the mitral valve into the left atrium dividing the stroke volume estimated by volumetric method into two components: the aortic flow volume which represent the effective stroke volume, and the regurgitant flow volume which still present within the heart overestimating the calculated ejection fraction
